Massage

Massage is a fantastic way to complement chiropractic treatment and enhance the recovery of your muscles after activity or simply to help you relax after a long week. At Maldon Chiropractic we aim to give you the best possible treatment and specialise in a variety of massage types.

What is it?

Swedish massage is the most common and widespread massage technique of the West and it is based entirely on Western concepts of anatomy and physiology. Your skin will be lubricated with massage oil and our fully qualified massage therapists will ask you your preference for either light or firm pressure. They will then perform various massage strokes, which serve to warm up the muscle tissue, release tension and gradually break up muscle knots.

What are the benefits?

Swedish massage might come across as an indulgent luxury, but the health benefits are in fact endless. Swedish massage has been found to reduce muscle spasms and tension. It relieves pain through encouraging the release of endorphins, your body’s natural painkillers. It stimulates relaxation and therefore reduces anxiety, creating a mood enlightening experience. Swedish massage also improves blood circulation, assisting in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to all of your cells.

What is it?

Deep tissue massage is based on Swedish massage, but it focuses on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissues. The movements of the massage strokes are slower and the pressure is firmer and concentrated on areas of tension and pain in order to release deep chronic muscle tension.

What are the benefits?

When there you have deep chronic muscle tension there are usually bands of painful, rigid tissue in your muscles and connective tissues. Such bands can block circulation, cause pain, limit movement and lead to inflammation. Deep tissue massage breaks down these rigid tissue bands to relieve pain and restore normal movement. People often notice they have an improved range of motion almost immediately after their massage.

What is it?

Sports massage therapy is not only for injured sportspeople, it can also be very beneficial to individuals who want to get back to full fitness or improve their sporting performance. The prime purpose of this kind of massage is to alleviate the stress and tension that has built up in the body’s soft tissues as a result of physical activity. It is designed to restore balance to your body’s system of bones and muscles. The style of this type of massage is based on the various elements of Swedish massage, but it tends to be deeper and more intense.

What are the benefits?

By concentrating on muscle groups appropriate to your sport, our therapists can help you to maintain or improve range of motion and muscle flexibility.

If you have been injured, sports massage can also assist in the recovery process by working to increase your tissue permeability, which allows fluids and nutrients to pass through more readily. This promotes the rapid removal of waste products and encourages muscles to take up oxygen and nutrients encouraging a quick recovery rate.

Further, if you sustain an injury and do not seek immediate treatment, scar tissue can form haphazardly, which can potentially result in long term inflexibility issues. Massage helps to realign scar tissue and restore flexibility.

What is it?

Hot stone massage is a form of massage therapy that uses volcanic basalt stones which hold heat, helping to create a deep tissue massage to work tight, knotted muscles and release tension. Hot stone massage is very relaxing and soothing. The hot stones are used much in the same way as I would use my hands, gently smoothing away the tensions of daily life.

What are the benefits?

When you are stressed or generally overloaded with everyday tension, hot stones massage can help to alleviate minor aches and muscles tightness. It is deeply relaxing thereby helping to further release tension from the body and mind.

What is it?

Aromatherapy massage is based on Swedish massage techniques. It is a gentle and effective massage using essential oils added to the massage oil. Essential oils are highly concentrated plant oils with many benefits. Each oil has specific properties to help various conditions. The sense of smell is directly linked to the brain, which can trigger emotions and help to sooth and calm the soul.
